Finish Comparison

Property Formica (HPL) PET PETG Thermal-Cured Lacquer
Appearance Wide range of colours and patterns. Solid feel. Clean ultra-matte or high-gloss. Modern look. Exceptional clarity in gloss; ultra-tough matte. Smooth, painted finish. Classic or modern flat.
Durability High — resists scratches and marks. Toughest choice. High — anti-scratch and fingerprint resistant. Superior — highly impact and scratch resistant. Moderate — can chip if struck hard.
Humidity Good — surface is waterproof. Needs edge sealing. Excellent — moisture-resistant polymer surface. Exceptional — superior moisture-proof properties. Moderate — requires high-quality multi-coat painting.
Maintenance Low — wipe with damp cloth. No special treatment needed. Low — anti-fingerprint properties (especially in matte). Easy to clean. Moderate — avoid abrasive cleaners. Can be polished if minor marks occur. Low — wipe clean. Avoid excessive moisture at edges.

Technical Breakdown: How Your Panels Are Made

1. Formica (High-Pressure Laminate / HPL)

The Process: Multiple layers of kraft paper are soaked in phenolic resin, topped with a decorative pattern, and then compressed under extreme heat (150°C) and high pressure (>1000 psi). This creates a single, bulletproof sheet that is later bonded to your cabinet core.

The Advantage: It is practically indestructible. If you have a busy wet kitchen with heavy cooking, HPL is the only material that can handle the physical abuse of pots, pans, and aggressive cleaning without scratching.

2. Thermal-Cured Lacquer (Premium Finish)

The Process: This is a specialized "wet" finish. We start with a high-density core, apply several rounds of primer, and then spray multiple coats of polyurethane lacquer. Each layer is cured in a controlled oven to create a hard, shell-like finish.

The Advantage: Clean Elegance. Unlike other panels, lacquer has no edge banding. The paint wraps around every corner, giving you a smooth, monolithic look that is impossible to achieve with films or laminates.

3. PET & PETG (Engineering Polymers)

The Process: A high-tech polyester film (the same non-toxic material used in medical devices) is heat-laminated onto a moisture-resistant core. PETG is the "Luxury Grade," where glycol is added to the plastic's molecular structure to make it more impact-resistant and flexible.

The Advantage: Modern Perfection. You get the scratch resistance of HPL with the sleek, modern look of high-gloss or ultra-matte. It is PVC-free, non-toxic, and specifically designed not to "yellow" or peel in Brunei's heat.

Door Construction Methods

  • Flat slab (full-board Formica/PET): A flat panel with the finish applied to the face and edges. Clean, modern look. No routed profiles or raised panels. Most common in contemporary designs.
  • Membrane press (PVC film wrapped): A thin PVC film is vacuum-pressed over an MDF door with routed profiles (shaker, raised panel). Allows 3D shapes but the film can peel at edges in high humidity. Not ideal for wet kitchens.
  • Thermal-Cured Lacquer: Multi-coat spray-applied paint on MDF or plywood core. Allows for custom colours and shaker-style routed profiles.
  • Aluminium-framed glass: Aluminium frame with glass or PET insert. Used for display cabinets, upper wall units, and feature pieces. No humidity concerns.
  • Climate Recommendations for Brunei

Note on Internals: Unlike many cabinet makers who use thin Melamine (LPL) for internal shelving, Caramella uses High-Pressure Formica (HPL) for both exterior doors and internal carcasses to ensure maximum humidity resistance and lifetime durability.
