Plain-language definitions of materials, hardware, construction methods, and industry terms used in Brunei kitchen and wardrobe projects.

A
- ABS Edge Banding
- Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene plastic strips applied to exposed panel edges to seal against moisture entry. Standard quality for residential cabinetry is 1mm thickness. Thinner 0.4mm strips are economy-grade. See Edge Sealing Guide.
- Anti-Fingerprint Coating
- A specialized surface treatment applied to ultra-matte finishes (like PET and PETG) that prevents visible oil marks and smudges from hands. Essential for modern, dark-coloured kitchens.
- AVENTOS
- Blum's range of lift systems for wall cabinet doors. Includes AVENTOS HF (bi-fold), HK (stay-lift), HL (parallel lift), and HS (up-and-over). Allows overhead doors to open upward without blocking the user.
B
- Backsplash
- The vertical surface between the countertop and wall cabinets. Protects the wall from cooking splashes. Material options: tile, glass, quartz, or Formica panel.
- Blum
- Austrian manufacturer (Julius Blum GmbH, est. 1952) of premium concealed hinges, drawer runners, and lift systems. Known for TANDEM concealed runners, CLIP top hinges, and AVENTOS lift systems. Tested to 80,000+ cycles.
- Butt Joint
- A basic cabinet joint where two panels meet edge-to-face and are glued or stapled. The simplest and weakest joint type. Common in economy flat-pack furniture. See Drawer Box Guide.
C
- Carcass
- The internal box of a cabinet — the sides, top, and bottom — before the doors and countertops are added. Unlike standard cabinets with melamine interiors, Caramella carcasses are surfaced with High-Pressure HPL (Full Seal) for superior humidity resistance.
- Carousel (Lazy Susan)
- A rotating tray system installed inside corner cabinets to provide access to otherwise dead space. Typically 270° or 360° rotation. Alternative to magic corner pull-out systems.
- CLIP top
- Blum's premium concealed hinge system with integrated soft-close (BLUMOTION). Tool-free mounting with 3D adjustment (height, depth, lateral). Industry standard for quality cabinetry.
- CNC (Computer Numerical Control)
- Automated cutting machinery that cuts panels to programmed dimensions. Tolerance of 0.1mm ensures panels fit precisely without manual adjustment. Used for panel cutting, edge profiling, and drilling.
- Concealed Hinge (European Hinge)
- A hinge that is invisible when the door is closed, mounted inside the cabinet with a 35mm cup bored into the door. Allows 3D adjustment. All quality cabinet hinges are now concealed type.
- Countertop (Benchtop)
- The horizontal work surface on top of lower cabinets. Common materials in Brunei: quartz composite or formica. See Countertop Materials Compared.
D
- Dado Joint (Housing Joint)
- A slot cut into one panel that receives the edge of another. Creates a strong joint with large contact area. Used in premium drawer box construction.
- Diamond Series (HIGOLD)
- HIGOLD's heavy-duty storage line featuring trivalent chromium plating and 70kg load-rated sliders. Designed for large pantry units and high-capacity pull-outs. See HIGOLD Spotlight.
- Dovetail Joint
- A joint reinforced with wooden dowels inserted into pre-drilled holes. Stronger than butt joints. Common in mid-range construction.
- Drawer Box
- The internal box that slides on runners. Made from plywood (premium), MDF, or particleboard. Quality is determined by wall thickness (12mm economy, 15mm standard, 18mm premium) and joint type. See Drawer Box Guide.
- Dry Kitchen
- The primary, visible kitchen used for light preparation, plating, and socialising. In many Brunei homes, the dry kitchen faces the living/dining area while a separate wet kitchen handles heavy cooking. Typically receives premium finishes.
- DTC
- Dongtai Hardware (China) — manufacturer of drawer runners and hinges. Multiple product lines at various price points. Commonly used as a cost-effective alternative to Blum. See Blum vs DTC Guide.
E
- Edge Banding
- Strips applied to exposed panel edges to seal the core material and provide a finished appearance. Materials: ABS (standard), PVC (economy), or PET (premium). Applied with EVA or PUR adhesive.
- The lowest chemical gas emission classification for engineered wood products. ENF/E0 boards emit ≤0.025 mg/m³ — near-zero chemical gases. Important for indoor air quality, especially in Brunei where windows are often closed for air conditioning.
- EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate)
- Thermoplastic hot-melt adhesive used to bond edge banding. Applied at 180°C–190°C. Creates a strong bond engineered for Brunei's humidity levels. Re-softens if reheated. See Edge Sealing Guide.
F
- Filler Panel
- A narrow strip used to close gaps between cabinets and walls. Ensures a clean, custom-fitted appearance. Cut on-site during installation.
- Flat-Pack
- Cabinets shipped unassembled in flat cartons for on-site assembly. Lower cost than pre-assembled, but quality depends on assembly skill. Most imported franchise kitchens arrive as flat-pack.
- Full Extension
- A drawer runner type that allows the drawer to open to its full depth, providing access to the entire interior. Blum TANDEM runners are full-extension. Partial-extension runners leave 5–10cm inaccessible at the back.
G
- Galley Kitchen
- A kitchen layout with two parallel runs of cabinets facing each other. Highly efficient for single-cook workflow. Requires minimum 1.0m aisle width. See Kitchen Layout Guide.
H
- Higold
- Chinese manufacturer of premium kitchen and wardrobe accessories: pull-out baskets, spice racks, corner carousels, trouser racks, and organiser systems. Available in stainless steel and chrome finishes.
- HPL (High-Pressure Formica)
- A durable surface material made by pressing kraft paper layers with melamine resin under heat and pressure. Scratch-resistant, UV-stable, humidity-resistant. The most practical door finish for Brunei's tropical climate.
I–K
- Island
- A freestanding cabinet unit in the centre of a kitchen, not attached to any wall. Provides additional counter space, storage, and often includes seating. Requires minimum 3.6m × 3.6m kitchen footprint. See Layout Types.
- Kickboard (Plinth)
- The recessed panel at the base of floor cabinets, typically 100–150mm high. Creates toe space for standing close to the counter. Should be moisture-resistant or PVC in wet kitchens.
L
- L-Shaped Layout
- Kitchen layout with cabinets along two adjacent walls. The most popular configuration in Brunei residential kitchens. Creates a natural work triangle. See Layout Types.
- Formica
- High-Pressure Laminate (Formica) — the industrial-grade surface standard at Caramella. We use HPL for both exterior doors and internal carcasses to ensure a fully moisture-proof build.
- Thermal-Cured Lacquer
- A premium "wet" finish where multiple coats of polyurethane paint are spray-applied to a core and then cured in a controlled industrial environment using heat. This creates a hard, durable, monolithic shell with no visible edge banding. Ideal for classic shaker-style profiles and custom colour requirements.
- Linear Metre (Running Metre)
- A measurement of cabinet length — 1 linear metre equals 1 metre of cabinet frontage. Used for approximate pricing comparisons. Actual costs depend on height, depth, internal fittings, and specification.
M
- Magic Corner
- A pull-out system for blind corner cabinets. The inner trays swing out and forward when the door opens, providing full access to corner storage. Alternative to a carousel/lazy susan.
- MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)
- Engineered wood made from wood fibres bonded with resin under heat and pressure. Smooth surface ideal for painting and membrane-press door profiles. Heavier than particleboard. Available in moisture-resistant (MR-MDF) grade.
- Melamine / LPL
- A low-pressure decorative surface common in budget cabinetry. **Caramella does not use Melamine or LPL**; we use High-Pressure Formica (HPL) for both exterior doors and internal shelving to ensure lifetime durability and resistance to Brunei's humidity.
- Moisture-Resistant Board (MR Board)
- Core material (usually Particle Board or MDF) manufactured with moisture-resistant resin (typically green-tinted core). Engineered for 80–90% RH environments like Brunei. Essential for tropical cabinetry. Not waterproof — still requires edge sealing.
N
- Nano-Coating (Hardware)
- An ultrafine molecular protective layer applied to HIGOLD sinks and accessories. Provides hydrophobic (water-repelling) properties, extreme scratch resistance, and self-cleaning capabilities.
O
- OSB Board (Oriented Strand Board)
- A structural engineered wood material made from compressed wood strands and waterproof adhesive. Known for its high strength and distinct textured appearance. Often used as a substrate material in specialised cabinetry and architectural features.
P
- Particleboard (Chipboard)
- Engineered wood panel made from wood particles bonded with resin. The most common carcass material for residential cabinetry worldwide. Quality varies by density, resin type, and moisture resistance rating.
- Plinth
- See Kickboard.
- Plywood
- Engineered wood made from thin layers (veneers) glued with alternating grain directions. Stronger and more moisture-resistant than particleboard. Used for premium drawer boxes, cabinet backs, and wet-area applications.
- Pocket Screw Joint
- A joint where an angled screw is driven through a pocket hole in one panel into an adjacent panel. Provides ongoing mechanical fastening force — resists loosening under load better than dowel or butt joints.
- PUR (Polyurethane Reactive)
- A reactive hot-melt adhesive that forms a permanent, waterproof cross-linked bond once cured. Cannot be re-softened (unlike EVA). Preferred for wet kitchens, bathrooms, and marine applications. See Edge Sealing Guide.
Q–R
- Quartz Composite
- Engineered countertop material: 93% ground quartz + 7% polymer resin binder. Non-porous, no sealing required, maintenance-free. Mohs hardness 7. The most popular countertop choice for Brunei dry kitchens. See Countertop Materials.
- Runner (Drawer Slide)
- The hardware mechanism that allows a drawer to open and close. Types: side-mounted (visible), undermount/concealed (hidden beneath drawer). Quality measured by load rating (kg), lifespan, and extension type.
S
- Shaker Door
- A door style with a flat centre panel surrounded by a profiled frame. Classic, timeless look. Can be made from MDF with routed profile or solid wood frame.
- Shearer Series (HIGOLD)
- HIGOLD's premium accessibility line using lightweight aerospace-grade aluminum. Features advanced lift-up and pull-down mechanisms for upper cabinets. Optimized for vertical storage and easy reach.
- Slab Door
- A flat, frameless door panel. The most common style in modern/contemporary kitchens. Clean lines, easy to produce, works with all finish types.
- Soft-Close
- A hydraulic damping mechanism integrated into hinges and drawer runners. Decelerates the door/drawer in the final few centimetres, preventing slamming. Now standard in quality cabinetry. Blum calls this BLUMOTION.
T
- TANDEM
- Blum's premium concealed (undermount) drawer runner system. Available in 30kg (550H) and 60kg (566H) load ratings. Full extension, integrated BLUMOTION soft-close, 80,000+ lifespan tested to EN 15338.
- Thermofoil (Membrane Press)
- A PVC film vacuum-pressed over a routed MDF door. Allows 3D profiles (shaker, raised panel) at lower cost than solid wood. Risk: film can peel at edges in high humidity — not ideal for Brunei wet kitchens.
U–Z
- Undermount Sink
- A sink mounted beneath the countertop with a polished cutout edge visible from above. Requires a Quartz Composite countertop (cannot be done with Formica). Creates an easy wipe-down surface.
- U-Shaped Layout
- Kitchen layout with cabinets on three walls forming a horseshoe. Maximum storage and counter space. Requires minimum 3.0m × 2.4m. See Layout Types.
- PET
- Polyethylene Terephthalate polymer film used as a high-quality door finish. Known for being eco-friendly, PVC-free, and resistant to UV yellowing. Available in super-matte or high-gloss.
- PETG
- Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified finish. Offers superior impact resistance and technical toughness compared to standard PET. Known for exceptional clarity in high-gloss applications and extreme durability in Brunei's humidity.
- Wet Kitchen
- A secondary kitchen separated for heavy cooking — frying, steaming, boiling. Common in Brunei, Malaysian, and Singaporean homes. Exposed to water, cooking oil, steam, and cleaning chemicals. Requires moisture-resistant materials throughout. See Wet Kitchen Guide.
- Work Triangle
- The imaginary triangle connecting the three main kitchen work areas: sink, stove/hob, and refrigerator. An efficient work triangle minimises steps during cooking. Ideal total perimeter: 4–8 metres. Each leg should be 1.2–2.7 metres.
