Drawer Runners: Blum and DTC, Explained
When quotes look similar, runner tier is one of the easiest places to hide cost. Here is how to compare it cleanly.

Quick Answer
Who this page is for: Homeowners comparing kitchen quotes and trying to understand whether a runner upgrade is worth it for feel, alignment, and long-term use.
Use this page to compare runner tiers by model and load rating, not brand name alone.
Why Runner Choice Matters
Drawer runners are the most-used parts of your kitchen. A typical drawer is opened and closed several times a day. Over 10 years, that’s thousands of pulls and pushes. Lower-cost runners start to feel rough, noisy, or get stuck after just a few years. Premium runners stay smooth for decades.
The runner also determines how smoothly and quietly a drawer moves, how much weight it can carry, and whether it shuts gently without slamming. In Brunei's humid air, the quality of the metal also stops parts from rusting or sticking over time.

Concealed vs Side-Mounted Runners
There are two main installation types, each with different trade-offs:
- Concealed undermount: Runner is hidden beneath the drawer box. Clean look — no visible hardware when the drawer is open. Requires precise drawer box dimensions (typically 13mm clearance per side). Most premium kitchens use this type. Both Blum TANDEM and some DTC models offer this.
- Side-mounted (3-joint): Our standard for wardrobes. Durable, high-load capacity, and extremely reliable for large clothing drawers. Caramella uses DTC's 3-joint series for consistent tracking results.
Soft-Close: How It Works
Soft-close (or self-close) mechanisms decelerate the drawer in the last 30–50mm of its travel and pull it gently into the fully closed position. This prevents slamming and reduces wear on both the runner and the cabinet.
Quality varies significantly between designs. Higher-end systems (Blum BLUMOTION) provide consistent, smooth deceleration regardless of how hard the drawer is pushed. Lower-cost soft-close mechanisms may feel inconsistent — working well when the drawer is gently pushed, but failing to fully decelerate when pushed hard. Ask for a demonstration if possible.
Decision Framework
Neither brand is universally "better" — the right choice depends on your priorities:
- Choose Blum TANDEM if: You prioritise concealed look, consistent soft-close feel, long lifespan, and are willing to pay the premium. Best for main kitchen drawers used daily.
- Choose DTC if: You need to manage costs across a large project (full house builds), are outfitting utility or secondary areas, or are comparing a specific DTC model that meets your load and cycle requirements. Always verify the specific model's specs rather than relying on the brand name.
- Caramella Hardware Strategy: We use Blum TANDEM for primary kitchen drawers where precision and concealed aesthetics are key. For wardrobes, where drawer size and depth often differ, we use DTC 3-joint side runners for their superior tracking stability in larger boxes.
