Why Standard Kitchens Struggle in Brunei

Wet kitchens face daily challenges that dry kitchens don't:

Direct Water Splashes

Washing ingredients and heavy cooking means water frequently splashes onto cabinet faces and pools near the base.

Trapped Steam & Heat

Intense boiling and frying generate spikes in humidity. Without perfect ventilation, this steam condenses directly onto your cabinets.

Poor Air Circulation

Many wet kitchens rely on open windows instead of AC, meaning Brunei's naturally humid air lingers around the cabinets all day long.

Peeling Edges

If the cabinet edges aren't sealed with high-heat adhesive, moisture seeps into the core, causing the wood to instantly swell and ruin the finish.

The Result: Swollen doors, peeling edges, sticky drawers, and soft spots within just a few years if the materials aren't built for the tropics.

How Caramella Builds Wet Kitchen Cabinets

1. Moisture-Resistant Board Selection

We use High-Pressure HPL boards (not thin Melamine or lower-cost particleboard) with low chemical gas emission. The industrial HPL layer provides a superior moisture barrier on all face surfaces.

For extreme wet areas (under-sink cabinets), we recommend moisture-resistant plywood or aluminum carcasses.

2. EVA Edge Sealing at 180°C–190°C

Every exposed edge is sealed with EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) hot-melt adhesive applied at 180°C–190°C using an automatic edge banding machine. This creates a tight, waterproof bond between the edge tape and the board.

Why it matters: PVC edge tape applied with weak adhesive peels off when exposed to steam and water. EVA bonding resists heat, moisture, and cleaning chemicals.

3. Sealed Drawer Boxes

Drawer boxes are constructed from 18mm boards with pocket-screw joints and edge-sealed on all exposed sides. This prevents moisture entry from daily use.

4. Base Cabinet Detailing

  • Adjustable legs (100mm minimum) — lifts the cabinet off the floor to prevent direct water contact and allow airflow
  • Waterproof kickboards — PVC or aluminum, not MDF wrapped in vinyl
  • Drip edges on countertops — prevents water runoff from soaking into cabinet face frames

5. Hinge and Hardware Protection

We use European hinges with nickel-plated or stainless steel finish (Blum or equivalent). Drawer slides are specified for damp environments (DTC or Blum soft-close runners with rusting-resistant coating).

Typical Wet Kitchen Price Ranges (Brunei)

Standard Wet Kitchen

BND 2,990 – 5,000

  • 3-4 meter run of cabinets (base + wall)
  • High-Pressure HPL boards, EVA edge sealing
  • DTC soft-close runners
  • Formica countertop (economy option)
  • Basic sink and faucet cut-outs

Suitable for most terrace and national housing wet kitchens.

Premium Wet Kitchen

BND 5,000 – 10,000

  • 4-6 meter run with full-height pantry
  • Premium edge sealing, moisture-resistant plywood where needed
  • Blum TANDEM concealed runners
  • Quartz composite countertop
  • Under-mount sink, integrated dish rack
  • LED under-cabinet lighting

Detached homes, larger wet kitchen spaces with premium finishes.

High-Moisture Wet Kitchen

BND 6,000 – 15,000+

  • Moisture-resistant plywood or aluminum carcass construction
  • Stainless steel or high-rusting-resistant hardware
  • Quartz composite worktop
  • Enhanced edge sealing methods

For areas with extreme moisture exposure.

What affects cost: Cabinet length (linear meters), drawer count, material upgrades (moisture-resistant plywood vs HPL surfaced boards), hardware tier (Blum vs DTC), countertop material, and site conditions (difficult access, uneven floors).

Common Wet Kitchen Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Raw MDF or Particleboard

Problem: Absorbs moisture like a sponge. Swells, warps, and loses structural integrity.

Fix: Use High-Pressure HPL-surfaced boards or moisture-resistant plywood for all panels exposed to moisture.

❌ Weak Edge Tape

Problem: PVC edge tape applied with low-temperature adhesive peels off in steam and heat.

Fix: EVA edge sealing applied at 180°C–190°C creates a waterproof bond that resists heat and moisture.

❌ Cabinets Sitting on Floor

Problem: Water pools under base cabinets. Kickboards and cabinet bottoms absorb moisture, leading to rot and mold.

Fix: Use adjustable plastic legs (≥100mm) to lift cabinets off the floor and allow airflow.

❌ Lower-cost Hardware

Problem: Basic steel hinges and runners rust in humid environments. Doors sag, drawers jam.

Fix: Nickel-plated or stainless steel hinges and rusting-resistant drawer slides (Blum, DTC).

Wet Kitchen Design Considerations

Ventilation

Proper ventilation is critical. If your wet kitchen doesn't have a window or exhaust fan, moisture accumulates inside cabinets and causes damage over time.

Recommendation: Install an exhaust fan or range hood that vents to the outside (not recirculating). For enclosed wet kitchens, consider a ventilation grille above the door.

Drainage

Ensure your floor has a slight slope toward the floor drain. Water should flow away from cabinets, not pool at the cabinet base.

Lighting

Wet kitchens often have poor natural light. LED strip lighting under wall cabinets improves visibility and reduces moisture-related shadows where mold can grow unnoticed.

Storage Layout

Store frequently used items (oils, seasonings, utensils) in wall cabinets or drawers, not in base cabinets near the floor where humidity is highest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Soalan Lazim · Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same materials for wet kitchen and dry kitchen?

You can, but it's not optimal. Wet kitchens need more robust moisture protection: better edge sealing, rusting-resistant hardware, and raised base cabinets. Dry kitchens can use lighter-duty specs since they don't face direct water exposure.

How long does a well-built wet kitchen last in Brunei?

With proper materials (HPL-surfaced boards, EVA edge sealing, rusting-resistant hardware) and regular cleaning, 10-15+ years. Poorly built wet kitchens show swelling and peeling within 2-3 years.

Do I need waterproof plywood for a standard wet kitchen?

Not necessarily. For most enclosed wet kitchens with basic window ventilation, HPL-surfaced boards with proper EVA edge sealing are sufficient. Moisture-resistant plywood (not fully waterproof) is recommended for under-sink cabinets or areas with higher moisture exposure.

Melayu: Tidak semestinya.

What's the best countertop material for wet kitchens?

Quartz composite is the strongest long-term option for wet kitchens because it handles heat, stains, and daily cleaning with less maintenance. Formica is the economy option and can work well when substrate choice, edge sealing, and sink cut-out protection are executed properly.

Can Caramella build high-moisture wet kitchens?

Yes. We specify moisture-resistant plywood or aluminum carcasses, stainless steel hardware, and weather-resistant finishes for high-moisture installations. Pricing starts higher due to material upgrades and drainage planning.

Melayu: Ya.

How do I maintain my wet kitchen cabinets?

1) Wipe down cabinet faces after heavy cooking to remove moisture and grease. 2) Keep base cabinet doors open occasionally to air out interiors. 3) Check under-sink for leaks monthly. 4) Avoid soaking cabinet surfaces when mopping floors.

Melayu: 1) Lap permukaan kabinet selepas memasak untuk buang lembapan. 2) Buka pintu kabinet bawah sekali-sekala untuk pengudaraan. 3) Periksa bawah sinki untuk kebocoran setiap bulan. 4) Elakkan merendam permukaan kabinet semasa mengemop.

Why Imported Wet Kitchens Fail in Brunei

Wet kitchens face the harshest conditions — direct water, steam, and 80–90% humidity simultaneously. Cabinets from Miri or other cross-border sources, built to 60–75% RH standards, are particularly vulnerable in wet kitchen installations.

Common failures: edge banding peeling within 12 months, carcass swelling around sink areas, and mould growth behind enclosed panels. All preventable with properly engineered materials.
