Let's be clear: Flat-pack furniture (like you'd find at IKEA or order from Taobao/Shopee) is an incredible invention. The systems are highly standardized, the initial sticker price is unbeatable, and the showrooms look fantastic.
If you are renovating a temporary rental property or flipping a house on a strict budget, ordering a pre-made kitchen is a completely valid, smart financial decision. We never tell customers that flat-pack is "bad"—only that it is engineered for a specific use-case and climate. When you bring these European or factory-standard systems into a Brunei home, you need to understand the trade-offs.
1. The Climate and Material Difference
The single biggest reason custom cabinets cost more in Brunei than an imported flat-pack kitchen comes down to the core material (the core material).
Pre-Made Cabinets
To keep shipping costs low, most pre-made or "flat-pack" cabinets are made from standard particleboard. In dryer countries, this lasts a long time. In Brunei’s high humidity, these boards act like a sponge, soaking up moisture until the edges start to swell and peel.
Custom Local Materials
Local installers understand the environment. High-quality custom cabinets in Brunei are built using MR (Moisture-Resistant) boards or heavy 18mm ENF-grade plywood. Plywood is composed of cross-laminated wood veneers, making it vastly stronger and highly resistant to warping and swelling in tropical kitchens.
2. The "Hidden" Assembly and Installation Costs
The sticker price of a flat-pack kitchen represents only the cost of the materials in cardboard boxes. It does not include the logistics from the box to your wall.
- Assembly Time: Assembling 15 cabinet boxes, aligning hinges, and installing drawer runners takes days of labor. If you don't DIY, you will need to hire a freelance carpenter.
- Fitting to your Walls: Walls in Brunei are rarely perfectly straight. Custom cabinets are "scribed" — meaning the carpenter trims the edges on-site to match the exact curve of your wall. This gives you a perfectly fitted look with no gaps. Pre-made boxes are perfectly square; if your wall is slightly curved, you’ll see ugly gaps where the cabinet meets the concrete.
- Countertop Coordination: Most affordable flat-pack kitchens use Formica countertops. If you want a stone surface (Quartz or Sintered Stone), you will need to hire a separate stone specialist to template and install it over your pre-made cabinets.

Choose Local Custom Cabinetry if:
- This is your "forever home" and you expect the kitchen to last 15+ years without sagging or peeling.
- You have an awkward layout, uneven walls, or want cabinets that stretch completely to the ceiling.
- You want a heavy-duty wet kitchen that can withstand Brunei's humidity, heavy local cooking, and daily water exposure.
