The Appeal of the Flat-Pack Kitchen

Let's be clear: Flat-pack furniture (like you'd find at IKEA or order from Taobao/Shopee) is an incredible invention. The systems are highly standardized, the initial sticker price is unbeatable, and the showrooms look fantastic.

If you are renovating a temporary rental property or flipping a house on a strict budget, ordering a pre-made kitchen is a completely valid, smart financial decision. We never tell customers that flat-pack is "bad"—only that it is engineered for a specific use-case and climate. When you bring these European or factory-standard systems into a Brunei home, you need to understand the trade-offs.

1. The Climate and Material Difference

The single biggest reason custom cabinets cost more in Brunei than an imported flat-pack kitchen comes down to the core material (the core material).

Pre-Made Cabinets

To keep shipping costs low, most pre-made or "flat-pack" cabinets are made from standard particleboard. In dryer countries, this lasts a long time. In Brunei’s high humidity, these boards act like a sponge, soaking up moisture until the edges start to swell and peel.

Custom Local Materials

Local installers understand the environment. High-quality custom cabinets in Brunei are built using MR (Moisture-Resistant) boards or heavy 18mm ENF-grade plywood. Plywood is composed of cross-laminated wood veneers, making it vastly stronger and highly resistant to warping and swelling in tropical kitchens.

2. The "Hidden" Assembly and Installation Costs

The sticker price of a flat-pack kitchen represents only the cost of the materials in cardboard boxes. It does not include the logistics from the box to your wall.

3. Maximizing Your Space (Standard vs. Custom Sizes)

Every centimeter counts in a kitchen or bedroom.

Feature Pre-Made / Flat-Pack Custom Cabinetry
Sizing Rules Manufactured in rigid intervals (e.g., 400mm, 600mm, 800mm wide boxes). Designed and cut to the exact millimeter of your room.
The "Filler" Issue If you have a 2500mm wall, and buy four 600mm cabinets (2400mm total), you lose 100mm of space to a blank "filler" panel. Those four cabinets are custom-sized to 625mm each, completely eliminating wasted space.
Ceiling Height Often leaves a gap on top that collects dust, unless you build a custom bulkhead. Can be built "floor to ceiling" to maximize vertical storage and eliminate dust traps atop cabinets.

Curious about the true cost of custom?

Many homeowners are surprised to find that when you factor in freelance assembly labor, shipping, and third-party stone installation, local premium custom cabinetry is highly competitive—especially when measured over a decade of lifespan.
