The Brief
This house sits right near the Brunei River in Kota Batu. Beautiful spot, but an absolute nightmare for standard cabinetry. Their old chipboard cabinets were swelling, peeling, and smelled musty from the constant salty, humid air coming off the water. The owners were fed up and wanted something that would actually last—and they wanted it safe for their kids without any chemical off-gassing.
Their priorities:
- Chemical Safety: Zero-formaldehyde (ENF graded) panels to protect indoor air quality.
- Moisture Resilience: Complete defense against 85%+ humidity levels from the river.
- Solid Surfaces: Replacing porous countertops with solid Quartz.
Project Timeline
Thorough assessment of previous moisture damage patterns. Decision made to upgrade exclusively to ENF-grade plywood.
Material sourcing specific to high-moisture resistance. Design confirmed and deposit completed.
Every cut panel was immediately edge-banded with 1mm PVC edge tape at 190°C to prevent any atmospheric moisture from penetrating the core during transport.
Old swelled cabinets removed. New base cabinets installed on raised adjustable legs to isolate from potential floor moisture.
Solid quartz fitted and sealed with heavy-duty silicone around all wet wall seams. Walkthrough and handover complete.
What Made This Work
ENF-Grade Plywood Core
We abandoned standard MDF/particleboard. ENF Plywood provides superior structural resistance to moisture and meets the highest safety testing for zero formaldehyde emissions.
Heat-Sealed Edges
Humidity ruins cabinets through tiny gaps in edge banding. Using EVA hot-melt glue at 190°C permanently fuses the PVC edge to the panel core, locking out moisture.
Elevated Plumb Lines
100mm adjustable ABS cabinet legs ensure the wooden carcass never physically touches the wet floor during mopping or minor water spills.
Zero-Porosity Surfaces
The Quartz countertop is completely non-porous, meaning water, oil, and humidity cannot penetrate it. A significant upgrade over existing laminates.
