Why Quartz Outperforms Everything Else in Brunei
Engineered quartz is 93% ground natural quartz bound with 7% polymer resin. The result is a non-porous slab that does not absorb liquids, oils, or bacteria — the single most important property for a tropical kitchen. Granite, by contrast, has micro-pores that absorb cooking oils and harbour bacteria, especially at 80–90% RH.
Non-Porous Surface
Zero liquid absorption. Turmeric, soy sauce, and cooking oil wipe clean without staining. No sealing required — ever.
Scratch Resistant (Mohs 7)
Harder than glass and most kitchen knives. Resists scratching from daily use, though we still recommend cutting boards for blade longevity.
Hygienic
Non-porous surface means bacteria and mould cannot penetrate. NSF/ANSI 51 certified food-safe. Critical in Brunei's humid kitchens where bacteria multiply faster.
Zero Maintenance
No annual sealing, no special cleaners. Soap and water is all you need. Compare this to granite (annual sealing) or marble (daily worry about acid etching).
Comparison
Quartz vs Sintered Stone vs Formica
| Property | Quartz | Sintered Stone | Formica |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | 93% quartz + 7% resin | Minerals compressed at 1200°C | HPL bonded to particleboard |
| Heat Resistance | Moderate — use trivets | Excellent — direct hot pan safe | Low — burns and delaminates |
| Scratch Resistance | High (Mohs 7) | Very High (Mohs 8) | Moderate |
| Stain Resistance | Excellent — non-porous | Excellent — non-porous | Good — surface only |

Cost Framework
Quartz Countertop Pricing (Brunei)
| Application | Typical Cost | Details |
|---|---|---|
| L-shaped Kitchen (10–12 linear ft) | BND 1,200 – 4,200 | Standard colours at lower end, veined marble-look at upper end. Includes undermount sink cutout. |
| Island Countertop (5–7 linear ft) | BND 600 – 2,450 | Flat edge standard. Waterfall edge adds BND 800–1,500 per side. |
| Bathroom Vanity Top | BND 300 – 900 | Single basin cutout. Polished edge. Smaller slab = lower cost. |
