Is Your Kitchen Big Enough for an Island?
An island needs minimum 90cm clearance on all accessible sides. This allows safe movement, full drawer extension, and dishwasher door swing. For a standard 1.5m island, your kitchen floor area should be at least 3.6m × 3.6m. Most RPN and STKRJ terrace kitchens are not suitable — an L-shaped or U-shaped layout serves those spaces better.
If your space qualifies, the payoff is significant: an island adds 4–6 linear metres of additional counter space, concealed storage on four sides, and a natural social anchor where family gathers while meals are prepared.
