Why is My Cheap Furniture Peeling and Swelling?

Experiencing severe buyer's remorse because your brand new flat-pack TV console is bubbling? It's not your fault—it's physics.

The 85% Humidity Baseline

Brunei Darussalam sits in an equatorial tropical zone characterized by year-round high temperatures and extreme relative humidity that frequently exceeds 85%. This environmental baseline is profoundly hostile to standard, mass-produced furniture shipped from China or Europe.

Engineered wood products, particularly low-density particleboard commonly utilized in imported flat-pack furniture, are highly hygroscopic. This means they act like sponges, actively absorbing moisture directly from the ambient air. As the wood fibers absorb this moisture, they expand at a cellular level. This leads to irreversible swelling, the delamination of surface veneers (peeling), and ultimate structural failure.

DIY Mitigation Strategies

You can't change the weather, but you can alter your indoor environment to slow down the degradation:

The 18mm ENF + EVA Sealing Cure

Once particleboard swells, it cannot be fixed. The permanent solution relies on superior material science. Caramella exclusively utilizes 18mm ENF-grade plywood. Unlike particleboard (which is sawdust and glue), plywood features thin layers of real wood veneer heavily cross-laminated for incredible strength and dimensional stability.

Furthermore, standard flat-pack furniture uses thin, manual iron-on edge tape that peels off quickly. At Caramella, we utilize a 190°C EVA hot-melt application to fuse 1mm thickness ABS plastic edging to the plywood. This creates a continuous thermoplastic armor that completely locks out atmospheric moisture, guaranteeing a multi-decade lifespan.
